What Dorcas does
Signature styles
Every style below is installed on your own hair with braiding hair you bring. Prices start at the shortest length.
How pricing works
Two things set the price
How long you want it, and how big the braids are. That's the whole price list. Tap a length to see what it costs.
Large braids are quicker and cheaper. Medium braids take longer, sit finer and last longer. Shown here: knotless braids, medium.
Meet your stylist
Dorcas B.
Ten years braiding in Los Angeles, working from her home studio in Koreatown.
She takes one client at a time. That means an appointment starts when it says it will, and the last hour of an install gets the same attention as the first. Children are welcome from age three, with breaks built into longer sessions.
Tension is the thing she is strict about. If a braid pulls, say so — it gets redone. Protective styling is only protective when your edges survive it.

Five things to do first
Getting these right is the difference between a five-hour appointment and a seven-hour one.
- Wash and dry your hair The day before or the morning of. Hair must be fully dry — damp hair will not hold a braid and can mildew under extensions.
- Detangle all the way through Comb it out completely. Undetangled hair is the single biggest cause of a session running long.
- Skip the heavy products No gel, grease or mousse on the day. A light leave-in is fine. Product build-up makes the braid slip.
- Bring your own braiding hair Hair is not included in any price. See the guide below for how many packs to buy — bring one spare pack, it is better than running out.
- Eat first, and bring a charger Installs run from two hours to nine. Bring food, water and something to watch. Breaks are built into the longer sessions.

Aftercare
Making them last
Sleep in satin. A satin bonnet or pillowcase every night. Cotton pulls moisture out of the hair and frizzes the braid within a week.
Oil your scalp twice a week. Light oil applied to the scalp itself, not the length. A dry scalp itches, and scratching loosens the roots.
Wash every two to three weeks. Diluted shampoo in a squeeze bottle, applied to the scalp. Squeeze the length, do not rub. Dry fully.
Take them out at eight weeks. Four to eight weeks depending on the style. Past eight, matting at the root starts costing you hair.
